Philadelphia
Once Work, now Play
by Jen A. Miller
The name “Manayunk” comes from the Lenape Indian word “manaiung,” which means “where we go to drink.” But that only partly describes Philly’s Manayunk neighborhood, a former industrial sector that’s now a hub of shops, restaurants, and pubs.
In the 19th century, Manayunk was a factory town with textile mills powered by water from the Schuylkill River. Cotton and wool aren’t made at the mills anymore, but the buildings are still there. You can see them as you stroll down Main Street, the area’s hub.
Nicole Miller opened her first shop in Manayunk in 1994, and she still has a spot along Main Street; her bridal lounge is popular with brides-to-be all over the region. Her shop joins Benjamin Lovell Shoes, Tag, and Vamp as fashion destinations.
When it comes to dining, the main attraction is the street itself: Just about every restaurant has outdoor tables where you can watch the crowd go by (and bring your dog, too). Derek’s, Winnie’s Le Bus, and Kildare’s are a few prime people-watching spots. For a riverfront view, hit the Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant and sit on the deck overlooking the water. And take note of the water line at the main bar. You’ll find it hard to believe the river really got that high during one memorable flood. If you’re craving a slice of pizza, The Couch Tomato Café is a recent addition that’s proven a big hit with locals and visitors alike.
For an after-dinner night out, check out Bourbon Blue Canal Lounge, which features DJs and live music. It’s also a popular spot to watch a football game. The Manayunk Brewery transforms its dining deck into a dance floor when the weather is warm.
Manayunk is easily accessible via public transportation from Center City. Just take the R6 line to the Manayunk stop.
