Walk this Way
by Julie Moore
Making a stop in D.C.? Bring your sneakers. According to the Brookings Institution, the nation’s capital is the most walkable city in America. You can grab a map and head out on your own, but if you prefer exploring with a guide, these tours are worth checking out. No need for reservations — just show up.
DC by Foot
College buddies Ben Hindman and Brody Davis launched this company last year with the mission of making quality tours available to visitors on every budget. The energetic duo provide their services for free, working for tips only. Tours meet near the Washington Monument and end on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Along the way, you’ll visit some of the city’s most treasured monuments and learn about their history. You’ll also discover the answers to such trivia questions as why Abraham Lincoln wore a beard, why the White House is white, and which president invented the seventh-inning stretch. Tours begin at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. every day through November 14.

Washington Walks
For as little as $10 per person, you can choose a themed tour that fits your interests. Discover the architecture of Embassy Row, explore the National Mall memorials by moonlight, take a trip down U Street (where Duke Ellington grew up), nosh your way through town on D.C. delicacies, or uncover the city’s best-kept secrets. The company also offers haunted house tours and a special one-time December holiday tour that includes a visit to the National Christmas tree. Through October 31, tours are offered Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and on weekends.
